Posted by This morning’s project features a $10 dresser everyone passed on at an estate sale because it smelled musty. Like ‘sitting in a cellar for years at grandma’s house’ musty! I have dealt with this before so we gobbled it up for $5!
Before we headed home, we went to Home Depot and grabbed a can of Kilz Complete Aerosol. KILZ Complete Aerosol is an interior/exterior primer that provides a mildew resistant coating that blocks out most stains caused by water, smoke, tannin, ink, pencil, felt marker, grease and graffiti, and seals pet and smoke odors. It works GREAT!
At home, I removed the hardware and spray painted it high glass black. I then spray painted the entire dresser with the Kilz, including the drawers and under-carriage and set it in the sun to dry.
After I painted a coat of paint on another dresserr, I painted this entire dresser with Annie Sloan Old White Chalk Paint. I mixed in some pure white paint to give it an even brighter white color. I painted two coats all over (including in the drawers, inside, and on the back).
I let it dry for 30 minutes and then pulled out my power sander! If you distress more than one piece of furniture in your life, you need a power sander! Mine is a Black and Decker model I bought for $5 at a garage sale two years ago. Instead of buying the more expensive sheets made for the sander, I buy sheets of sand paper and cut them to fit the sander (four pieces of sanding paper per sheet).
To finish it off, I waxed it with Annie Sloan clear wax. It looks amazing!
